Treasure Hunting with Millie, part 1
Hi from the Motor City!
It's officially May but I don't think Mother Nature got the message because it's been gray skies and chilly temps all week. I normally don't mind a little bit of a gloomy day because it great for daydreaming about the moors in Wuthering Heights. Of course in my version I wouldn't die in the muscly arms of Heathcliff; I'd probably end up talking about something stupid like historical inaccuracies in modern films and then he'd just never talk to me again.
So instead of snuggling up and watching movies, I bundled up and went to work. And that's where I finally found the time to snap some photos of my treasure hunt finds from last weekend.
High key, low key: the lighting in my apartment is TERRIBLE. I was explaining this to someone at work today and they asked if my place has windows. Yes, my place as a very normal amount of windows but the lighting is still inexplicably terrible. Fortunately, there is a lot of really great natural light at work and I had some time in-between projects to play photographer.
On Saturday my Mom and I drove past a rummage sale in fabulous Ferndale, Michigan and decided stop in. That's where I found this vintage Coblentz purse in a large cardboard box filled with other gently used purses.
Apart from how clean it was on the inside, the best part about this purse is the red lining inside the coin pocket. It reminds me of Christian Louboutin shoes and that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside. Coblentz purses was founded in the 1930's, closed doors during the 1970's and peak popularity was in 1949 with the introduction of a line of alligator bags.
I also found these great Lincoln Beautyware canisters at a table that had about five different coffee pots on display. I already have some dusty rose Tupperware canisters that I use for my baking supplies but I couldn't pass these up. I ultimately decided to use them for extra storage on my kitchen counter.
Next we popped by an estate sale in Royal Oak where I found this set of four midcentury Bascal aluminum drinking cups in blue, pink, green and orange. I've always wanted some of these to use for milkshakes. Because as we all know, an appropriate vessel for your milkshake is important stuff.
My gal pals Gabby and Heidi hanging out while I stage photos like a nerd.
Here's a thrift store find from this weekend. I'm not sure of the brand or the exact time period of this purse but isn't it darling? I love the wicker style purses from the 50's and 60's. There's no tag inside except for one that says made in China, so I'm thinking this was probably made in the 80's. But that's ok, I promise to love it as if it were my very own.
At some point mom and I took a break in-between hunts and stopped for lunch at this place in downtown Royal Oak called Comet Burger. Neither of us had been there before and I seriously couldn't get over how awesome the sign outside was. Story time: when I was studying for my advertising degree, my copywriting professor always used to describe that style of lettering extending beyond the billboard as "violating the space". And because I'm five years old, I laughed every time he said it.
Inside, we were greeted by the most adorable Formica style tables and pink vinyl chairs. I wanted to steal four of these chairs for my kitchen. I have a set of four high back midcentury chairs but they badly need to be reupholstered and I just haven't gotten around to it.
Because we were starving, I didn't think to snap any photos of what we ordered except for this iced tea (because isn't that the most perfect lemon slice you've ever seen?) Suffice it say, they make chili cheese fries that will blow your mind.
Plus, rest assured that if your phone ever dies, they do have a payphone in the back by the toilets.
It's funny because I've always had this fantasy of walking by a ringing payphone, answering it and having the call actually be for me. I know it'll never happen but I've never let that kill my payphone dreams. Talk soon! xox Steph
